Universal Children Day is being observed on Friday (Nov 20).

In an interview with Radio Pakistan's News and Current Affairs Channel on the occasion, Minister of State for Education Balighur Rehman said children are the most precious and valuable asset of the country and we are duty bound to concentrate on their rights.

He said the government has taken extraordinary steps over the last two years for the promotion of education and health facilities.

He said our literacy rate has gone up while the net enrollment at the primary level has also registered an increase. Child mortality rate has also been reduced. He however stressed that the government has a long way to go to further improve these statistics.

In his remarks, UNICEF Country Representative Angela Kearney pointed out that Pakistan was amongst the countries, which ratified the Convention on Child's rights at an early stage.

She also recognized the improvements made by the country in education sector as well as in reducing child mortality rate.
