Subsurface fluid injection can cause earthquake activity
May 20, 2019

Researchers at Tufts University, United States have discovered that the practice of subsurface fluid injection used for oil and gas exploration can cause significant, rapidly spreading earthquake activity beyond the fluid diffusion zone.

The researchers found that deep fluid injections greater than one kilometer deep are known to be associated with enhanced seismic activity.

The results of this research further suggest that the frequency of human-made earthquakes in some regions of the country surpass natural earthquake hotspots
