Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to visit Gilgit to perform groundbreaking of Pakistan-China Optical Fiber Cable Project today.
Optical Fiber Cable project, costing 44 million dollars will be completed in two years.
"It will help in catering the rapidly growing Internet traffic needs of the country"
Special Communication Organization will lay 820 kilometre long cable from Rawalpindi to Khunjarab
On completion the project will provide an alternate telecommunication route between Pakistan and China and the Central Asian States
The Prime Minister will also administer oath of the newly elected members of Gilgit Baltistan Council.
On completion, the project will also facilitate trade, tourism and IT awareness in the region and generate economic opportunities particularly in Gilgit-Baltistan
The agreement to lay optic fibre between the two sides was signed during Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif official visit to China in July 2013
Pakistan-China Optical Fiber Cable will create a link between Pakistan and Trans-Asia Europe (TAE) cable in China
This link will enable both Pakistan and China to have alternative routes for their international telecom traffic.

The short-range surface-to-surface missile was tested from test range at Chandipur in Odisha.
Prithvi-II has been designed to operate with both liquid and solid fuels and is capable of carrying both conventional and nuclear payloads
