Youth bulge provides unique opportunity to utilize potential in economic dev: Shamshad

Caretaker Minister for Finance and Planning Dr. Shamshad Akhtar says youth bulge in Pakistan provides a unique opportunity to utilize their potential in contributing to urban economic development. She was speaking at launching ceremony of "The State of Pakistani Cities" report in Islamabad today. Dr. Shamshad Akhtar said sustainable and inclusive urban economies can be created by promoting urban strategies and policies that strengthen capacity of cities as drivers of socio-economic development. Addressing the ceremony, Minister for Climate Change Muhammad Yusuf Shaikh reiterated commitment of the government to formulate the National and Provincial Urban Policies through participatory approach to arrive at viable solutions for climate resilient urban development in the country. According to census 2017, seventy five million people live in urban areas of Pakistan while fifty four percent of the total urban population lives in ten cities.

Pakistan generates 95 percent of its total federal tax revenue from its ten major cities. The average urban per capita income in Pakistan among the ten cities varies from thirty seven thousand to seventy thousand rupees.
