Pakistan has welcomed the announcement by US President Barack Obama to reestablish diplomatic ties with Cuba and pursue a policy of engagement rather than isolation.

In a statement in Islamabad on Thursday, Foreign Office Spokesperson said Pakistan regards this decision by US and Cuba as a step in the right direction.

The statement said Pakistan has consistently been supporting the lifting of sanctions against Cuba at the United Nations.

The Spokesperson expressed the hope that the US decision would go a long way for establishing peace and stability in the region.
