Theresa May announces snap general election on June 8
UK Prime Minister Theresa May has announced plans to call for early general election on 8 June.
In a statement issued today, she said it was the only way to guarantee political stability for years ahead as Britain negotiates its way out of the European Union.
She said legislation would be introduced to pave the way for the early election.
Under current legislation, the next election was not scheduled to take place until 2020.
