While ignoring the warnings from environment groups, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated country's controversial dam on the Narmada River in Gujarat state today.

Construction work on the project was started in 1987, however, it was suspended in 1996 following a stay order by the Supreme Court.

The Narmada Bachao Andolan, led by social activist Medha Patkar, has been protesting against the project saying that hundreds of thousands of people will lose their livelihoods if the dam is constructed.
