World must remain engaged with Afghanistan to avert any humanitarian crisis: Analysts
September 17, 2021

Dr. Rasheed Ahmed Khan (IR Expert): Main agenda of SCO summit is current situation in Afghanistan. Prime Minister Imran Khan has rightly called for coordinated efforts for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan as peace and stability in that country is of critical importance for the neighboring countries in particular and the region in general. There is a new reality in Afghanistan. The world must recognize and engage with Taliban government in order to prevent economic collapse, civil war, and terrorism in the war torn country. It is also a test and challenge for Taliban leadership to relate their ideological vision to the political imperatives of inclusiveness and diversity. The future of international aid depends on recognition of the Taliban government by the international community.

Dr. Amna Mehmood (IR Expert): It is the time that the entire region realizes the new reality in Afghanistan. SCO is the most important regional organization and can be instrumental in ensuring peace and stability in Afghanistan. China and Russia played active role in Taliban-US agreement and ensured the formation of a new government in Kabul without civil war. The economic troubles have aggravated the humanitarian crisis in the war-ravaged country because of food and medicine shortages. It is in the world’s own interest to engage with Taliban, especially on counterterrorism concerns and human rights issues. The international community must maintain their diplomatic presence in the war-torn country. Pakistan’s efforts to gain support for Afghanistan’s new administration come from its concerns about economic collapse and humanitarian catastrophe in the war torn country if international community abandons it.

Dr. Huma Baqai (IR Expert): Prime Minister Imran Khan clearly indicated the ground reality. The world must accept the fact that Taliban are new face of Afghan politics and it is the reality. There are certain challenges in Afghanistan that have to be addressed by the world powers and regional stakeholders. There is shortage of food in the war-torn country and if aid is not provided to the Afghan people till the end of this month then there will huge loss of innocent lives. So far, Taliban have managed to maintain order in the country and the international community must engage with them and save Afghanistan from financial crisis. The world needs to constructively engage the Taliban to prevent a governance collapse and avert another refugee crisis. The immediate international concern relates to the presence of terrorist networks in Afghanistan. If present Afghan government is isolated, it may become the hub of terrorism and the entire world could face its consequences.

Dr. A. Z. Hilali (IR Expert): Pakistan is playing a responsible role in recent regional situation while the entire world has adopted wait and see policy. The western machinery is pursuing a planned strategy to make the region unstable and isolate Afghanistan. But it must be realized that the ignorance of international community could have certain issues. The world must understand that a peaceful and stable Afghanistan is in the best interest of the world. There is a need of constructive and collective approach to deal with the issues in Afghanistan. There may be the issue of refugees. Pakistan is not in a position to deal with the issue of refugees because of economic position of the country. Pakistan at its end is making all out efforts to convince the world to remain engaged with the new Afghan government and prevent financial and humanitarian crisis in that country.
