Winter Olympics: Germany at top with 9 gold medals

In Winter Olympics 2018 in South Korea, Germany maintains top position with nine gold, two silver and four bronze medals.

According to the Medal Table, Norway stands on second position with six gold, eight silver and five bronze medals while Netherlands is on third place with six gold, five silver and two bronze medals.

American skier Lindsey Vonn was quickly knocked out of the medal contention after an error in the women's super-G race at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics on Saturday.

Vonn, running first, grimaced in anguish after she nearly missed a gate and struggled to keep her line in her descent of 1min 21:49sec.

The 33-year-old was denied a medal when she was outpaced by Italy's Johanna Schnarf, Switzerland's Lara Gut and finally Tina Weirather of Leichtenstein, running seventh. Forty-five skiers are on the start list.

Vonn, one of the best known athletes at the Games, took super-G bronze along with downhill gold at Vancouver 2010. She will also compete in the downhill and combined.

Her disappointment comes a day after giant slalom winner Mikaela Shiffrin was fourth in the slalom, ending her bid to retain the title she won in Sochi. 

Japan's Yuzuru Hanyu was in the lead after the men's figure skating short program.

Team GB's youngest athlete Izzy Atkin made history today by becoming the first Briton ever to win a medal in an Olympic skiing event.

Chinese skater Li Jinyu wins a silver medal in the 1500m women's speed skating event, bagging China’s fifth medal at Pyeong Chang 2018.

 

Canada’s Samuel Girard wins gold medal in 1,000 metre speed skating.

Polish ski jumping star Kamil Stoch held his nerve to retain his large hill individual title in Pyeongchang.

Germany's Andreas Wellinger produced a jump of 142m, the biggest of the final round, to take the lead with two jumpers left.

But Stoch, 30, replied with a jump of 136.5m, which was enough to clinch his third gold in the Winter Olympics.

Norwegian Robert Johansson won another bronze medal after also claiming third place in the normal hill event. (BBC)
