The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has warned that the tidal wave of bloodshed over more than six years of war in Syria has turned the country into a torture chamber.

In an address to the UN Human Rights Council today, the High Commissioner said that more than 320,000 people have been killed and millions forced to flee their homes since the conflict erupted six years ago.

He said that his office had been refused access to the country and no international human rights observers had been admitted to the places of torture where tens of thousands of people are currently held.
