US Defense Secretary Jim Mattis says government forces in Afghanistan are unable to defeat Taliban insurgents despite more than fifteen years of war.

In a tesitmony to the Senate Armed Services Committee he said Taliban are "surging" at the moment and "we are not winning in Afghanistan right now."

He, however, said "we will correct the situation as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has reportedly authorized Defence Secretary Jim Mattis to set troop levels in Afghanistan.
