North Korea has condemned the United States for bringing huge nuclear strategic assets to the Korean peninsula.

A spokesman for the North Korean Foreign Ministry in a statement said the US action threatens peace and security of the peninsula and pushes the situation there to the brink of a war.

Meanwhile, Japan's National Security Council has discussed how to evacuate its nearly 60,000 citizens from South Korea in the event of a crisis.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told a news conference in Tokyo today that the Council also discussed how to cope with a possible flood of North Korean refugees into Japan.

In another development, US Vice President Mike Pence will travel to South Korea on Sunday as a sign of the U.S. commitment to its ally in the face of rising tensions over North Korea's nuclear program.
