Historical perspective of Youm e Shuhada-e-Kashmir

In dogra rule, there was desecration of the Holy Quran by the Dogra Army, which resulted into mass reaction against the Dogra Rule all over the Jammu and Kashmir. During a protest rally in Srinagar, the summer Capital of Kashmir, Kashmiri Muslims denounced the act through their peaceful demonstrations. During the speeches, one young man, namely, Abdul Qadeer raised slogan against the Maharaja and pointed fingers, demanding destruction of his Palace, the centre of autocratic and cruel rule. The cruel Dogra Army arrested him and it was decided to try him in Central Jail Srinagar. On July 13, 1931, thousands of Kashmiris gathered outside Srinagar Central Jail to witness the court proceedings in a peaceful manner. During the course of court proceedings, there was a time of Zuhar Prayers and a Kashmir youth stood for Azan.

In the middle of Azan, he embraced martyrdom because of fire from Dogra Army. Though his fellow completed the Azan, however in the process, the Dogra Army killed twenty-two Muslims through its firing over the peaceful Muslim demonstrators. Later, it was revealed that, Mharaja himself order the firing through his Governor, Ray Zada Tartilok Chand. The Kashmiris subsequently buried the martyrs in Martyrs’ Graveyard at Khawaja Bazar, Srinagar after widespread demonstration. However, there was a complete strike throughout the state from July 13 to July 26, 1931. Youm-i-Shuhada-i-Kashmir, July 13, 1931 was a new beginning in the history of Kashmiri people. It gave new vigour and impetus to the Kashmiris Struggle for their right of self-determination.

Abdur Rasheed Turabi: (Leader, APHC)

Kashmiris has been fighting for their freedom since long. Back in 1931 it was a tyrannical dogra rule when a Kashmir youth stood for Azan in a protest and in the middle of Azan, he embraced martyrdom because of fire from Dogra Army. Though his fellow completed the Azan, however in the process, the Dogra Army killed twenty-two Muslims through its firing over the peaceful Muslim demonstrators. Today Kashmiris are facing another tyrannical rule of India. The way Indian forces are trying to curb the freedom movement with force and brute is unparalleled in the world.

Dr. M. Khan: (Defence Analyst)

Indian troops are killing innocent people in Occupied Kashmir. The troops there are violating the human rights laws and intruding Kashmiri’s homes. United Nation is not tackling the issue amicably. United Nation should settle the issue and put influence on India to resolve the issue and prevent India from use of force.

Ali Sarwar Naqvi: (Former Ambassador)

Indian brutalities are increasing every day in Occupied Kashmir. The Kashmiri people are protesting against Indian troops’ atrocities and they are struggling for right of self-determination but no one from the international community is taking interest in the issue. It is the responsibility of the UN to resolve the decades long issue.

Lt. Gen (Retd) Abdul Qayyum Khan: (Senator PML-N)

Indian armed forces are using force against unarmed innocent Kashmiris. Draconian laws have been implemented by India in Occupied Kashmir to stop the freedom movement. India is not fulfilling its promise. This day reminds us about the sacrifices rendered by Kashmiri people.
