U.S. President Donald Trump has sacked Secretary of State Rex Tillerson today after a series of public rifts over issues including North Korea and Russia, replacing him with CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Pompeo is to be replaced at CIA by Gina Haspel, who was Pompeo's deputy at CIA. She would be the first woman in that role.
This is the biggest shakeup of Trump’s Cabinet since he took office more than a year ago, which the president announced on Twitter.
This comes at a time when the US administration prepares for an unprecedented meeting with the leader of North Korea.
A senior White House official said Trump asked Tillerson to step down on Friday but the announcement came only a few hours after Tillerson landed in Washington after a trip to Africa that had been cut short.
