NASA today blasted off a spacecraft toward the Sun on a mission to unveil the mysteries of dangerous solar storms and protect Earth from its negative effects.

The spacecraft, costing 1.5 billion dollars, was launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida.

The Parker Solar Probe is designed to plunge into the Sun's atmosphere, known as the corona, during a seven-year mission.
