In India, tens of thousands of protesting farmers have reached Mumbai to protest a lack of government support despite severe distress.
The farmers are demanding waivers on agricultural loans in the aftermath of unseasonal rains that destroyed crops. They are also calling for fair prices for crops and transfer of forest lands to tribals.
This is second major local protest by farmers in less than a year and has put pressure on state government headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party, which has been facing farmers ire in various states.
Meanwhile, nine trekkers died and eighteen others severely burned as wildfires swept through a popular hiking spot in Tamil Nadu state.
