India: 2 regional parties form alliance against BJP
January 12, 2019

In India, two regional parties, including Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party, have formed an alliance against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's ruling Bhartiya Janata Party for the upcoming general election.

The two central-left parties have widespread support among lower castes and poor voters across the state of Uttar Pradesh.

The two parties, that were formerly bitter rivals, said they would set aside their differences to jointly fight Modi in Uttar Pradesh.

The Samajwadi Party head, Akhilesh Yadav said the alliance would counter the divisive politics of BJP.

He accused BJP of dividing the country and stoking fear and hatred among communities.
