Macedonian parliament agrees to change country's name
January 12, 2019

Macedonia's parliament has passed an amendment to the constitution to rename the country as Republic of North Macedonia.

Eighty-one deputies in the 120-seat parliament in capital Skopje voted in favor of the move.

The change in name came after reaching an agreement with Greece in June last year.

Greece had blocked the Balkan state's membership to EU and NATO over the use of 'Macedonia', which it said implied territorial claims to a Greek province of the same name.
