Cambodian PM accuses EU of holding country's population hostage with tariff threats
January 12, 2019

Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen says the European Union is holding his country's sixteen million population hostage by threatening to withdraw trade preferences for it.

Talking to former Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny in Phnom Penh, he said it would be another EU's mistake if it imposes sanctions on Cambodia through withdrawing Everything But Arms (EBA) preferential trade scheme.

The EU announced in October last year that Cambodia could lose its special trade access to European markets under the EBA preferences, citing concerns over human rights in the country.

The EU would take at least eighteen months to decide whether to withdraw the EBA preferences for Cambodia or not.
