A UN report says over eight thousand civilians were killed or wounded in Afghanistan in first nine months of the current year.

A report released by UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan today said that almost half of the victims were targeted in suicide bomb attacks and others in improvised devices.

The report said these incidents may amount to war crimes.

Meanwhile the top UN official in Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, renewed the world body's call for an immediate and peaceful settlement to the conflict. He said there can be no military solution to the fighting in Afghanistan.
