World Post Day was observed on Friday (October 9).

This year the theme is ‘Posts claim their place in the changing communication landscape.’

The purpose of World Post Day is to create awareness of the role of the postal sector in people’s and businesses’ everyday lives and its contribution to the social and economic development of countries. The celebration encourages countries to undertake programme activities aimed at generating a broader awareness of their Post’s role and activities among the public and media on a national scale.

WORLD POST DAY HISTORY:

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union (UPU) in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations. 

PAKISTAN POST BACKGROUND:

Pakistan’s first stamp designed by A. R. Chugtai and approved by Quaid-i-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

Pakistan Post Office is one of the oldest government departments in the Sub-Continent. In 1947, it began functioning as the Department of Post & Telegraph. In 1962, it was separated from the Telegraph & Telephone and started working as an independent attached department.

Pakistan Post is providing postal services in every nook and corner of the country through a network of around 13,000 post offices. Pakistan Post is providing delivery services to about 20 million households and businesses as community service without any cost considerations. In addition to its traditional role, the Pakistan Post also performs agency functions on behalf of Federal and Provincial governments, which inter-alias include Savings Bank, Postal Life Insurance, Collection of Taxes, Collection of Electricity, Water, Sui Gas and Telephone bills.

Pakistan Post is also providing a universal postal service network in harmony with the UPU strategy to ensure secure and timely delivery of mail, money and material at affordable cost through utilization of people, process and technology and innovative product offerings. (Source: pakpost.gov.pk)
