PM in UFA, Russia to attend SCO summit
The two-day Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Summit begins at Ufa today.
Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif who arrived in Ufa will represent Pakistan at the summit.
Speaking in Radio Pakistan’s Nuqta-e- Nazar Program, Lt. Gen (Retd.) Abdul Qadir Baloch (Minister of State and Frontier Regions) said : “It will be positive news if Pakistan becomes the full member of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Improvement in bilateral relations of India and Pakistan would definitely result in peace and prosperity in the region. Both the countries are neighbors and have vital importance in South Asian region. The expected meeting between Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan in Ufa at Shanghai Cooperation Organization will be an additional advantage for having peace in the region.” (Interview with NCAC correspondent Mudassir Hussain)
Mushahid Hussain Syed (Senator, PML-Q) said: “The SCO Summit has been held in Ufa which is a Muslim majority area in Russia. Ufa is the capital city of the Republic of Bashkortostan, Russia. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will also attend the outreach meeting of the leaders of BRICS states on the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin. Meeting between Indo-Pak Prime Ministers is also expected at this occasion. Both India and Pakistan should resolve their issues through dialogue. Pakistan has been focusing on to improve its bilateral relations with Russia. COAS Gen. Raheel Sharif had recently visited Russia to further cement the bilateral ties. By participating in such forums, Pakistan has an opportunity to devise independent foreign policies.” (Interview with NCAC correspondent Mudassir Hussain)
Kamil Ali Agha (Senator, PML-Q) said: “Neighbors could never be changed, so Pakistan and India need to improve their bilateral relations to improve the prospects of peace in the region. India leadership should avoid passing irresponsible statements about Pakistan as India Prime Minister recently did in Bangladesh. India has been involved in efforts to destabilize Pakistan and sabotaging development projects in the country. Pakistan's full membership of the SCO is likely to be approved in principle at the Ufa Summit which is a positive gesture.” (Interview with NCAC correspondent Mudassir Hussain)
Shibli Faraz (Senator, PTI) said: “India always tries to seek opportunities to destabilize Pakistan by all means and sabotage the underway development projects in our country. Indian Prime Minister should apologize for his confession regarding India’s role in the dismemberment of Pakistan in 1971’s. International community should also take notice of his statement. India’s dual face should be exposed before the world.” (Interview with NCAC correspondent Mudassir Hussain)
Muzaffar Ali Shah (Leader, PML-F) said: “India’s dream will never come true to become the regional hegemon. Kashmir issue should be resolved if India wants to improve its relations with Pakistan because Kashmir is the main issue between both the countries. Indo-Pak dialogue should be meaningful. Pakistan has strong evidence of Indian involvement to create disturbances in Pakistan.” (Interview with NCAC correspondent Mudassir Hussain)
Dr. Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema (Analyst) said: “Pakistan will be given a permanent status in SCO, which would be a significant development for the country. Pakistan can get benefits from experiences of China and Russia. Our country will be part of an increasingly integrated group, which works for collective benefits. Since Indian tilt towards USA, Russia is looking for alternative options and Pakistan can grasp the opportunity and strengthen its bilateral ties with Russia. Irresponsible statements made by Indian Prime Minister Modi have tarnished his image in the region, while Pakistan is hailed as a peace loving country and looking for regional stability and peaceful co-existence with neighboring countries. If India wants to improve its relations with Pakistan, it should support peaceful settlement of controversial issues, including Kashmir dispute.”
Dr. Zafar Nawaz Jaspal (Analyst) said: “The recent SCO summit and Pakistan’s participation in it has positive implications for Pakistan. The primary objective of SCO was to combat terrorism. Whereby, it is playing its part efficiently. SCO is an emerging bloc, which would serve as a balancer against NATO. Pakistan’s participation in BRICS is an opportunity to improve our global image. India has been belying Pakistan’s image since long and, now, we can use forums like SCO and BRICS to promote our perspective. With the meeting of PM, Nawaz Sharif and Modi, misconceptions and mistrust between the two countries would be resolved. It may be an ice-breaking event but no substantial development is expected due the Indian attitude. There may be economic multi-polarity in global economic system due to BRICS.”
Dr. Huma Baqai (Analyst) said: “Shanghai Cooperation Organization was constituted in 2009. Pakistan and India were not part of this organization at that time. After, sometimes Pakistan got observer status and now Pakistan and India will be the members of this organization. Main reason is that Pakistan has been fighting a successful war against terrorism and its economy has been improving day by day. Pakistan has been the best place for investment and foreign investors have been taking keen interest in development projects in Pakistan. A meeting between Pakistani and Indian prime ministers is also expected on this occasion. Improved Pakistan and India bilateral relations are vital for having peace in the region.”
Dr. Riffat Hussain (Analyst) said: “After a long wait, Pakistan will now become the member of SCO which is very positive news. Both Pakistan and India will get a permanent status of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. Pakistan’s induction in this organization has vital importance, because Russia and China are the members of SCO. Pakistan has an opportunity to expose real face of India before the international community through this forum. Pakistan has been making certain efforts to improve relations with India but New Delhi has always shown rigid attitude in this regard. Prime Ministers of India and Pakistan will meet after this conference and will focus on to resolve the issue through dialogue.”
Dr. Muhammad Khan (Defense Analyst) said: SCO is a significant regional organization in Asian region. It is a six member organization led by China and Russia. If Pakistan is granted full membership, it would be a major development for Pakistan. Pakistan has been working with it since long and deserves the membership. In recent past, Pakistan and Russia have been cultivating good relations and with the enlargement of SCO, Asian region would be more integrated. Pakistan and India may resolve their bilateral issues by utilizing SCO forum. Recently, Indian PM, Narendra Modi was assertive against Pakistan. However, temperature between both arch rivals has cooled down since the month of Ramzan. Meeting between PM, Nawaz Sharif and his Indian counterpart on the sidelines of SCO will pacify the bilateral tensions. PM’s expected participation in outreach meeting of the leaders of BRICS states is unique in nature. When it is critically analyzed, these newly emerging Asian lead blocs are challenging and counter balancing the hegemony of Western lead IMF and World Bank. Global political as well as economic focus has shifted from Atlantic to Pacific, which are long lasting developments.”
