Today marks 75 years since the United States unleashed the world’s second atomic bomb attack on the city of Nagasaki.

On this day in 1945, the United States dropped a bomb, dubbed “Fat Man" over Nagasaki, instantly killing more than 75,000 people.

Japan surrendered six days later, ending World War Two.

Japan is commemorating the 75th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on Aug. 6 and Aug. 9 this year.

Commemorations this year have been scaled back due to the COVID-19 pandemic, with fewer seats and video messages from dignitaries.
