A project to develop an Optical Character Recognition Engine for Android is in progress for smartphones software development in Pakistan.

Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunications, in collaboration with Abasyn University Islamabad, is executing the project at a cost of over 13 million rupees.

The project called "Smart Intelligence" intends to develop a state-of-the-art OCR Engine, which can be used by developers to produce their own applications.

The project will be completed by June 2015 in two different phases.

The completion of first phase would help tackle the character recognition for constrained or structured document images while in the second phase character recognition problem for unconstrained or unstructured document images will be addressed.

This is a big step as the future of smartphones market depends heavily on the availability of smarter and innovative applications.
