Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will participate in the two day Meeting of the Heads of State Council of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization at Astana in Kazakhstan beginning today.
Heads of State Council is the highest decision-making body of SCO which meets annually.
Pakistan has observer status at SCO and will become its full member at Astana. The decision, in principle, to give membership to Pakistan was taken by the SCO Heads of States meeting held at Ufa in Russia in 2015.
On the sidelines of the SCO Summit, the Prime Minister will hold a number of bilateral meetings with other participating leaders.
Besides the SCO Summit, Kazakhstan is also hosting the International Expo 2017, in which more than 100 countries including Pakistan are participating. The Prime Minister along with other participating SCO Heads of States will also attend the inaugural ceremony of the Expo.
Pakistan wants peaceful, stable, prosperous, and sovereign Afghanistan.
This was stated by Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry while participating in a discussion panel in Washington.
The Ambassador stressed there is an opportunity for both Pakistan and the United States to work together to achieve peace in Afghanistan.
He said mistrust between the two countries is blocking the progress in achieving the objective of peace. He said terrorism under any pretext is not acceptable to us.
Aizaz Chaudhry assured Pakistan’s efforts to bring peace in the region would not be interrupted by the rhetoric of the Afghan leadership.
The United States has lauded Pakistan’s efforts to eliminate terrorism.
The appreciation came from US Senator Lindsey Graham while talking to Pakistan’s Ambassador to the United States, Aizaz Chaudhry in Washington.
Aizaz Chaudhary briefed him on Pakistan’s effective and successful counter terrorism campaign and its enormous strides in the economic domain.
Planning Minister Ahsan Iqbal says peace has been restored in the country due to prudent policies of the government.
In an interview, he said tens of thousands of tourists have visited Pakistan during the last two years which indicates overall improvement in security situation of the country.
The Minister said country is rapidly progressing in energy, infrastructure and other fields.
Minister of State for Information Marriyum Aurangzeb while chairing a high level meeting in Islamabad stressed the need for an effective use of digital media to promote and project Pakistan’s image as a soft and democratic country at the global level.
In this regard she directed all the attached departments of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to work in integrated manner to make the best use of social media, which is one of the greatest technological advancement of the recent age.

The Economic Coordination Committee of the Cabinet has directed the relevant ministries to ensure price stability especially during the holy month of Ramazan.
The committee, which met in Islamabad today with Finance Minister Ishaq Dar in the chair, also approved 864 million rupees for the Printing Corporation of Pakistan in procuring new printing machines.
The committee also granted approval for payment of one month’s salary to the employees of Pakistan Steel Mills Corporation for the months of February and March this year.
ECC also approved revised pay packages for employees of Public Sector Development Program funded projects.
Sessions of the National Assembly and Senate are to be held in Islamabad at 11:00 am today.
Both the houses will continue general discussion on the federal budget for the next fiscal year.
The government has announced three public holidays for Eid-ul Fitr with effect from 26th of this month.
The Ministry of Interior has issued notification to this effect.
Secretary General of Organisation of Islamic Cooperation Dr Yousaf A Al-Othaimeen has called for peaceful resolution of Kashmir dispute in accordance with UN resolutions to bring durable peace in the region.
He was talking to Pakistan’s Ambassador to Saudi Arabia Khan Hasham Bin Saddique who called on him at the OIC secretariat in Jeddah.
The OIC Secretary General appreciated Pakistan for providing one hundred scholarships to students of OIC member countries.
Sikh community has demanded setting up of a UN tribunal to investigate Indian Army's brutalities against them during attack on Golden Temple in 1984.
The demand was made in a memorandum submitted to the UN by a Sikh rights group on the occasion of 33rd anniversary of the incident.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Sikhs rallied outside the UN Headquarters in New York holding placards and raising pro-Khalistan slogans.

In India, twenty people have been killed and ten others injured in an explosion at a fireworks factory in Balaghat district of Madhya Pradesh state.
The cause of the blast was not immediately known.

North Korea test fired several short-range land-to-ship cruise missiles off its east coast early this morning.
South Korea's Office of Joint Chiefs of Staff said in a statement that the missiles were launched from the coastal city of Wonsan that flew about two hundred kilometers.
Meanwhile, South Korea has said that it will hold off installing remaining components of a controversial U.S. anti-missile defense system until it completes an assessment of the system's impact on the environment.
In the ICC Champions Trophy, Pakistan beat South Africa by 19 runs under Duckworth Lewis method at Birmingham last night.
Batting first, South African scored 219 runs for the loss of eight wickets in fifty overs.
In reply, Pakistan were 119 for 3 in 27 overs when the match was stopped by rain. Later Pakistan was declared winner of the match under DL Method.
Hassan Ali of Pakistan who took three wickets was declared man of the match.
