German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has arrived in Israel on a four-day visit to the Middle East to hold meetings with Israeli and Palestinian leadership.

The visit takes place just days after Islraeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu refused to meet visiting German Foreign Minister Sigmar Gabriel for his meetings with rights groups critical of Israel's human rights abuses in occupied Palestinian territories. 

Germany is critical of Israeli settlement policy in occupied Palestinian lands.
