PML-N to move court against Election Tribunal verdict on NA-125
Ahsan says the points on which tribunal has based its verdict must be contested on legal basis.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) has decided to go into appeal against judgment of the Election Tribunal in NA-125 case.
This was announced by Federal Minister Pervaiz Rashid and Ahsan Iqbal and MNA Daniyal Aziz at a joint news conference in Islamabad today. It followed a meeting chaired by the Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad.
The Information Minister said the Prime Minister in a meeting heard both political aides and legal team.
He said Khawaja Saad Rafiq wanted to go to the people for re-election. He was of the view that PML(N) showed good results in the Cantonment Boards elections held recently and PTI faced defeat. Therefore, the PML(N) should go for by-election in his constituency.
Ahsan Iqbal said the legal team was of the view that the points on which the tribunal has based its verdict must be contested on legal and constitutional basis.
He said there were sufficient grounds to challenge the verdict as the tribunal clearly said there was no irregularity on the part of Khawaja Saad Rafiq. There was also no evidence of any nexus between the candidate and the polling staff for systematic rigging.
Ahsan Iqbal said the tribunal ordered re-election in the constituency on the basis of administrative irregularities and not because of illegalities.
Therefore, there was no justification to disenfranchise electorate on the basis of administrative irregularities.
To a question, the Information Minister said Khawaja Haris would contest the case in the Supreme Court and the appeal is expected to be filed during the next few days.
