The United Nations say droughts are worsening food security, despite robust food supply conditions across swathes of East Africa.

The Assistant Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization Kostas Stamoulis  in a statement said  access to food has been dramatically reduced in multiple countries simultaneously suffering civil conflicts.

He said famine has been formally declared in South Sudan, and the food security situation is also of grave concern in northern Nigeria, Somalia and Yemen.
