China has started work on second railway line to Tibet passing through some of the world's most mountainous and inhospitable territory.

According to XINHUA news agency, the work at the line's two ends in Chengdu and Tibet's capital Lhasa has begun.

China opened an initial line to Lhasa from Qinghai province to the northeast in 2006 that runs for 1,956 kilometers at an attitude of about 4,000 meters.
