North Korea says it has successfully tested a long-range intercontinental missile which has capability to hit anywhere in the world.
An announcement on North Koreas state television said the missile potentially has the range to reach the US mainland.
According to Japanese government, the missile flew for about 40 minutes and may have landed in Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone.
The development comes ahead of the G20 Summit later this week in which leaders of the United States, China, Japan and South Korea are expected to discuss efforts to rein in the North's Korea's nuclear and missile tests.
