China has warned the United Kingdom against interfering in Hong Kong's affairs, after the former colonial power promised sanctuary to locals who may flee the city, if a security law is passed.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Zhao Lijian at a regular news briefing in Beijing, accused the UK of having a colonial mentality with its historical links to Hong Kong stemming from "aggressive and unequal treaties".
