Kashmiris observe Right to Self-Determination Day
January 05, 2018

Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control and the world over are observing Right to Self-Determination Day, today (Friday) with a renewed pledge to continue liberation struggle.

It was on this day in 1949 when UN Security Council passed a resolution supporting the Kashmiris’ right to decide their future by themselves through UN-sponsored plebiscite.

The resistance leaders have called for complete shutdown in Sopore, tomorrow, on the completion of 25 years to a deadly massacre by Indian troops in the town.

Over 60 civilians were martyred and more than 350 structures including residential houses and shops were gutted when the Indian troops set the town ablaze on 6th January in 1993.

The Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Gilani in a statement in Srinagar today said that India could not deny the legitimacy and authenticity of the UN resolutions that formed basics of the Kashmir dispute and guaranteed its peaceful settlement as per the Kashmiris’ aspirations.

Senior APHC and Hurriyat leaders in their statements deplored that the UN had failed to implement its resolutions on Kashmir despite the passing of several decades.

Meanwhile, people staged forceful demonstrations in Pulwama and Shopian areas after the Indian troops launched cordon and search operations. The troops used brute force to disperse the protesters.

Speakers of a function held in Muzaffarabad urged the world community to fulfill its responsibilities regarding settlement of the Kashmir dispute to save the Kashmiris from the Indian brutalities.
