In Japan, people are voting in the metropolitan assembly elections today.

According to the Japanese state media, 259 candidates are contesting the elections , the second largest since the current total number of seats was set in 1997.

The main focus is being whether the ruling party's affiliated groups can secure a majority as the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is suffering from slumping support because of a scandal over suspected favoritism for a friend doing business.
