US President Barack Obama has urged Turkey to reduce tensions with Russia while stressing US support for its NATO ally's security.

Talking to his Turkish counterpart Tayyip Erdogan on eve of the climate summit in Paris, he said that the US was eager to accelerate work on its military relationship with Turkey to help resolve the conflict in Syria.

Meanwhile, Turkey has challenged Russia to prove its claim that Ankara shot down a Russian plane in order to protect its oil trade with Islamic State.
